The exact duties of a tenant are determined by the lease, which will spell out what has to be done. If there is no lease, or it is silent, the law varies from state to state. In most states, the tenant does not even need to give any advance notice, and just must leave the rental in good condition.

Keep in mind that you are also responsible for the condition of your rental. To receive the most back from your deposit, thoroughly clean it before you vacate.

Deep Cleaning is always a good idea though it is not necessary to carpet clean or to paint the walls. Leave a forwarding address for deposit return.

You need to read your lease, which will list all of your obligations as a tenant. You may be required to allow access to the apartment so that it can be shown to new tenants, paint walls, remove fixtures you have installed, etc. Check the lease carefully.
