You can read the law online. Pregnancy cannot be considered for the purposes of hiring, firing, promoting, etc. An employer can ask for a medical release if the circumstances deem it appropriate.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 says that a pregnancy cannot be a consideration in hiring, employment, insurance or benefits. A doctor's note can be required.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions. Employer cannot refuse to hire a woman due to her pregnancy. Pregnant employees must be allowed to work as long as they can perform their jobs and return to work just as employees returning from sick leave.

PDA_of_1978 amended Title_VII of Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964 that "pregnancy/childbirth/related-medical" apply to "sex-discrimination" prohibitions regarding employment/hiring, temporary-leave, health-medical-insurance, fringe-benefits... Pregnancy is a "temporary-disability"; an exception is if a doctor states otherwise in writing.
