Lariam is used to prevent and treat malaria. Mosquitos that spread malaria have developed a resistance to this medication, so it has fallen out of favor as a treatment. As with many other anti-malarials, Lariam can cause unpleasant psychiatric side effects. It is being studied as a possible treatment for other conditions, but has not yet been approved for them.

Lariam or Mefloquine is generally used for the treatment of malaria infection. This is not a perfect cure of malaria however it helps in destroying the parasite in blood cells, which are produced by the mosquito's byte in the liver. These parasites are called Plasmodia and Lariam kills these parasites, thus preventing spread in the blood vessels.
