To be incarcerated means you are detained in jail or prison for a period of time. Incarceration usually occurs after you have been convicted of a crime, and does not refer to political prisoners or people who are held in jail without charges.

From the Latin word for prison, carcere, it means to be detained in jail or prison for some period of time. It may not be a sentence, being placed in a cell for processing would be incarcerated.
