It could an infection that causing your fish to float vertically. If the fish has an infection, it could effect their swim bladder. Another cause could be that they ate too much and food stuck in them is pushing on their swim bladder and throwing off the fish's equilibrium making the fish swim vertically.

Your fish is very sick. It most likely has a swim bladder problem. Type swim bladder into a search engine and see what the treatments are.

There is a problem with your fish's swim bladder. This may be caused by constipation or an underlying health problem which could be parasites, bacteria, etc. If the fish is constipated, fast it for one day and then give it the inside of a cooked pea.

There is an illness likely associated with this trait called Swim Bladder Disorder, there are treatment plans available, start by fasting the fish 2-3 days and lowering the water level to decrease pressure. Speak with your local pet store about other ideas.

I'm not 100% sure, but i can recall reading about a beta fish (i own a beta so i'm more interested in that type of fish)and they brought that subject up and the answere was, the fish was getting weaker and as he ages his equilibrium was off, much like us as we age. I hope this helps.

This sounds like SBD. Try to get hm to eat a small amount of crushed, deshelled pea - this will aid in deigestion. If he starts to recover within a day or so, then you can start feeding him again, however, be very careful about how much you are feeding.
