What does "greens in regulation" mean in golf?

I see this statistic referred to all the time when watching professional golf, but what does it mean?

A player hits a green in regulation when he or she reaches the green two strokes below par- on the first stroke for a par 3 hole, the second stroke for a par 4, or the third stroke for a par 5. Reaching the green in regulation allows a golfer to two-putt and still save par.

Greens in regulation means the area of grass that is playable during a match or tournament. These are usually well kept green grass areas.
