Question by  Helpful (23)

What does endocervical/transformation zone component present mean?

I just recieved my pap results and have the statement on it that the endocervical/transformation zone component present, is this something to be concerned about?

The results mean that the pap smear was thorough enough to include cells from both the cervix and the uterus itself. This is a positive thing, because it means that your pap smear tested both types of cells.

The results of the PAP are generally sent to the physician for review and consider the overall picture. The results are not intended for lay people who do not have the knowledge to interpret the results. Contact your physician to assure that the results overall are normal.

Oh please, Patti. Comments in some of my medical reports that my doctor(s) neglected to tell me have turned out to be rather important to my future health!  add a comment

I agree!!! You can't leave your health to physicians!!! You have to be proactive and question. Lay people have the ability to gain knowledge. I have worked in hospitals, not all physicians are smart!!  add a comment

This means the doctor was successful in obtaining the cells needed to do the pap smear. They take cells from your cervix and endometrial lining. This is not something to be concerned about. If you have any dysplasia they will contact you to do further testing. Just keep getting your pap smears to stay healthy.

Yes it is something to be concerned about. This means that cancerous cells are present and it could be cervical cancer. So take the report near a doctor and get yourself checked immediately.

This is NOT true. It does not mean there is cancer. It means the sample is complete (good), that is all.  add a comment

You are very incorrect, SIDDHU. Stop scaring the poor girl with your nonsense. If you haven't had any medical training, don't try to answer questions such as these.  add a comment

this is not true...it means that they had enough cells to perform a good/correct/thorough pap smear.  add a comment

"Endocervical/transformation zone component present" means the specimen was obtained at the right zone where abnormal cells can be detected. So don't worry. about it.  add a comment

There is nothing to be concerned about when you read this statement. All that it means is that the doctor got a successful smear.

A pap that reads the results "endocervical/transformation zone component present" simply indicates the lab received a good reading. The endocervical/transformation zone is part of the cervix. The reading shows that they were able to get a 'good smear' of your cervical area, therefore the results(negative or positive) are accurate.

There is no cause for concern here. This simply means that your physician performed a successful smear, and was able to obtain cells from the endocervix and the transformation zone bordering it and the ectocervix.
