A retail merchandise manager oversees the overall products merchandising of the retail outlet. A consultant would be a person brought in to advise the RMM with specifics regarding a particular product, display or other pertaining to the retail operation.

A consultant is someone consults with businesses in whatever their expertise is. Retail merchandise management consultants do no necessarily shop on behalf of shops rather they consult shops on fashion purchases.

A "purchasing agent" (boss) or "buyer" (grunt) is "someone who shops on behalf of shops". A "retail (marketing and) merchandise management consultant" works on behalf of manufacturers and/or distributors and BROKERS deals with retailers. They either SELL product or BUY/PURCHASE "retail-shelf-space" depending on how you look at it. Realize that in larger-chains/stores manufacturers buy/lease retail-shelf-space & retailers receive inventory on-consignment.

Basically, the job is to order merchandise, maintain the inventory. You would be working in the backroom at a retail store.

No, a retail merchandise management consultant does not shop for shops. Instead, this is someone who helps retailers figure out how to run their companies. The consultant offers advice on retailing strategies, store design and similar issues.

This job is not always just someone who shops on behalf of shops. Sometimes this type of position works for a company that is contracted by manufacturers to go to shops and make sure their items are in stock and displayed properly. The consultant will then report back the status.
