A fuel tank pressure sensor is just like how it sounds: A device that is used to detect any negative or positive pressure changes in the fuel tank or evaporative control system.

It measures the pressure in you fuel tank and in newer cars if the pressure get to high, it stops sending gas to your engine. The sensor is used to measure the fuel tank pressure during the EVAP monitor which will give you better MPG.
