What do you look for when buying your first guitar?

I just started lessons and it's going well, so I want to buy my own guitar. I am using a borrowed one.

First decide what musical style you want to play. If you want to play classical music, then you need to buy a classical guitar; one with plastic strings. If you want to play rock, funk, blues etc, you should consider getting an electric guitar. Buy an acoustic guitar; metal string, if you want to learn comtemporary stuff.

Look for something economical with a light action. An acoustic guitar will be harder on your fingers than an electric. Used is always a good option.

There are few things more enjoyable than buying one's first guitar! Depending on your age, you want to get a size that is appropriate. If you are not yet adult size yourself, a 3/4 size guitar may be best. The next most important thing is to make sure the fingerboard has low action so that chords are easy to form.

Decide how much you can afford to spend, and try out a lot of guitars to find one that comfortable and has the sound and feel that you like.
