Generally a person has to have lost their job through no fault of their own to qualify for unemployment. A person who has never worked or quit their current job voluntarily usually does not qualify. Unemployment benefits are subject to a maximum dollar and time limits. Unemployment laws are regulated at the state level; different states may hold different requirements.

All states require that you prove you were employed for some period of time before you can collect unemployment benefits. The requirements vary by state. Also, you can't get benefits unless you prove you are actively seeking a job. But, many states will allow you to collect some benefits even if you just work part time.
