It is recommended that you cook or bake something that will make the house smell good. Baking cookies or bread is always a good idea to create a homey essence. Another idea is to steep cinnamon sticks and orange peel in a pot of water on the stovetop, this creates a pleasant aroma throughout the home.

I make Shredded Chicken Sandwiches and Sloppy Joes for my open houses. They can be made ahead of time and refrigerated. A few hours before the event, I put them in crock pots to heat them. They keep for several hours on low heat. I also serve chips, a fruit tray and a veggie tray.

Any kind of finger food would be good and keep the food simple so you can have time to visit and show people around. Try making some cookies ahead of time to make the house smell nice. Then try making some small sandwhiches and maybe chips and dip. Try a veggie tray and a fruit tray.

I would not cook anything that is too elaborate or takes a lot of time. There is no guarentee that anyone will show up for an open house. Many times it is just an excuse for your neighbors to see the inside of your house. Some homemade brownies or cookies are fine unless it is for a caravan of realtors.
