In the ISA, the yellow ribbon is a symbol of support for soldiers who are deployed overseas, a sign that these soldiers are missed, and will be welcomed home. The ribbon is probably a reference to the song: "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" from the 1970s.

The yellow bows are put up for troops that are overseas as a sign that friends and family are thinking of them. Putting up yellow ribbons probably comes from a Tony Orlando song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree".
