They help to reduce infection in the body by fighting fungi, viruses or even that might cause illness. Any activity that might lead to the decrease in their number, will lead to the increase in number of infections in the body. When they are in plenty, there is a deacrease in the number of infections in the body.

White platelets help the blood to clot at the site of an injury. They are your body's first defense against invaders.

You probably mean white blood cells (platelets aren't white). An increase in white cells means that the body is fighting an infection. A decrease means the inflammation/infection has decreased.

White platelets play a big role in bleeding (or lack thereof). The more you have, the more quickly a cut will begin to scab over. Too few platelets can be a symptom of a number of diseases, including Leukemia, so if you're bleeding too easily, see a doctor. Too many, and you could end up with serious blood clots.
