It is okay to re-use a plastic water bottle once, maybe twice. Water bottles are perfect breeding grounds for germs. The mouth piece is smaller the bottle, so any condensation is caught up in that area. The moisture, temperature, and fact that you touch that area continuously makes it almost impossible to NOT have bacterial buildup. It can be serious.

Reusing plastic water bottles is definitely not the best thing to do. Plastic contains a variety of chemicals, including BPA and Phthalate. I've also heard that plastic bottles can start to harbor bacteria as they break down. If you want to be a good friend, get them a reusable water bottle and make sure its BPA-free plastic or aluminum.

Reused plastic bottles can leach hazardous and carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals. If the person you're talking about wants to reuse plastic bottles, she should get a water filter and a reusable water bottle. However, they need to be washed well so they don't harbor bacteria.
