For a hiking daypack you would definitely want enough compartments to hold food, water, and amenities such as toilet paper and toothpaste. They are generally made of lightweight but durable material and have a number of expansions for lashing extra gear and such, depending on where you're going.

The most important thing is you want your pack to be comfortable. It should have wide shoulder straps and a wide hip belt. The backpack should be adjustable so that you can get the hip belt to sit high and comfortably on your hips. It should also be as light as possible while still having a sturdy frame.

Comfort: pack must fit you right, feel comfortable and stable when loaded. Capacity: able to carry 30% to 40% your body weight. Durable. Look for Osprey NorthFace LoweAlpine GoLite Marmot

Look for something with lots of ties and compartments. Depending on the amount of weight you are carrying (20% of your body weight is the max recommended), you will want to choose between soft, lighter, and solid, heavier, frame.
