car repairs

Question by  Gingercakes (920)

What do I do if the shifter on my Honda will not lock when I change gear?

This especially happens when I shift into park, but will happen between the other gears as well. Should I have my car serviced or is this not a problem?

verify clutch adjustment obtained by loosening adjustment screw locknut on motor clutch housing. Located right behind front wheel steering post. There is slot headed screw with locknut. Rotate screw, after loosening the nut, counterclockwise until feel it bind. turn in,clockwise 1/4-1/2turn and lock it down with the nut, will have hold the screw while tightening jam nut.

It can be dangerous, if you are out of your car while its in park and the gears slip you could end up with a wrecked car. It would probably be safest to get it serviced. You could probably try to trouble shoot it yourself. you can take off the casing around the shifter to see if there is dirt.

You should have the vehicle serviced, to rule out a more serious problem. The transmission could be in need of repair, which could be saved by quick prevention measures. Most likely though, you are facing a loose shifting column which can be easily fixed with a securing brace that keeps your gear shifter in place for park and moving gears.

It could be very dangerous if your car pops out of gear while your driving down the road. It sounds like your shifter gate has been worn down due to a lot of shifting. I would have a mechanic take a look at it and have it fixed as soon a possible.

Definitely have car serviced. Transmission needs replacing if gears wont lock. Continuing to drive in this condition will get you broken down on side of road.
