Just as with humans this can be caused via trauma or over a period of time. Has your cat ever been hurt seriously? Even an injury from the past could have put things in motion to finally cause a nerve to become damaged.

Many things can cause nerve damage including a fight with another cat or dog, a fall with a hard landing, being hit by something (car, mean child, etc). If the cat can still get around let it rest and heal in its own time. If it has trouble, see your vet.

usually, nerve damage in the back is due to injury. Cats are rather rough on their spines. I would recommend taking the cat to the vet.
