What could cause valves to be knocking on a Ford F-150.

If it's new and happens only at startup, that's pretty normal - I would guess it's a 5. 4L then. Otherwise if you buy a cheap oil filter and wrong weight oil, you can also experience the same thing. I would recommend a Motorcraft Filter and the correct weight oil. This should be a good starting point.

Unfortunately valves knocking are a definate sign of your engine ceasing. Most of the time knocking valves are due to regular maintenance such as oil changes being overlooked, late or not done at all. On occasion valves can become loose around there weld and or seal causing a knock.

You could have bad gasoline. You might have worn lifters or camshaft. A worn timing chain or belt could also be the culprit. Try running a tank full of premium through and see if the knock decreases. If not pull off the valve covers and check for loose or worn parts.

Your valves shouldn't be "knocking". It is common on some vehicle to hear the valves tick but it should not knock. If you hear a lot of noise you may have some valve-train damaged. This ticking is caused by loose valve train components slapping as the engine runs and can be fixed by adjusting the valves to factory recommended specifications.
