Though this can be caused by muscular hyperextension caused by over-exercise, it is a distinctive symptom of a number of gastro-enteric problems. This could be indicative of gall bladder issues, colon problems, or an appendix that is working on going bad. Your body is telling you it wants help, please see your physician. It can even indicate an ectopic pregnancy.

Many internal organs are in that general area and are prone to "referred pain", meaning your gallbladder could hurt but it feels like it's your kidney. If it's not a constant pain, keep a log of where and when it happens for a week and then see a doctor. If it's constant, see a doctor right away.

There are many conditions that can cause this, and it is best evaluated by a doctor, who will assess the exact type and location of the pain before ordering additional tests. This is the location of the liver and gallbladder, so some possibilities include gallstones and other liver diseases. A rib fracture or muscle strain may also be to blame.
