If this is just one paw, you may have an infection or issue that causes Puss to constantly lick at the paw- look for an injury or foreign object.

If the skin on the paw has been irritated and itchy, the cat may have simply chewed off the fur in an attempt to relieve the irritant.

Most commonly, loss of hair (aside from around the head) is the result of over-grooming. Over-grooming may be a sign of anxiety in your cat.
