What could be wrong if the check engine light came on and then stayed for some time only to come back on again?

Well it sounds like you have a part that is failing but hasn't completely failed. It is intermittently failing or only failing while experiencing certain conditions. You need check the codes to see what it could be. The light may have to be on for the code to be shown in some application but probably not.

There is no real way to diagnose this over the internet, take your car to your local parts store and ask them to use a OBD II scanner on it.

There are a lot of possibilities. The only way to tell is to take the care to a shop and have them check for engine codes.

If your check engine light comes on it is usually just the common problem of not screwing your gas cap on completely or correctly.
