The most common cause is a fur ball that the cat is trying to expel. This can be treated at home with over-the-counter feline products. If cough is with phlegm or runny nose and eyes, it may be more serious and require a vet visit.

The cat may have consumed grass in order to make up a digestive irritation or fur ball or the coughing may be a sign of feline calici virus.

Cats are nice to keep, having had so many cats in my life made me observe a lot of their practical life. You just can't predict what is actually wrong with them. They catch cold, they sneeze and they cough. If you want to help, just stay away from them and don't bother, they go out and find medicine on their own Don't cage them.

Sounds like a hairball or the cat may have a cold, give it a few days see what happens if it persists call the vet
