Question by  Nikki (22)

What could be causing my dog to become aggressive?

He was never aggressive towards people or other animals, but now he's started barking and growling and pulling at the leash.

Well my first guess would be that there is something bugging him. Maybe a bad tooth or his stomache, could be a lot of things. Or there could be other dogs picking on him causing him to defend himself. Or it could be a kid that is bugging him. Or anyone really.

When a dog that has never been aggressive before starts to exhibit aggressive behavior, it is usually due to fear. Has the dog had some sort of recent trauma, or are you giving your dog signals to be apprehensive in these situations? The best way to handle it is to remain calm and let your dog know what you expect.

Growling dogs are generally a sign of lacking obedience or training. All sorts of environment factors are involved. It is probably the dog's way of gaining attention that s(he) did not have before. Get the dog to an animal trainer where you can control behavior through repetitive actions.
