Smoking or exposure to second hand smoke will lead to a mucous build-up.. Exposure to allergens (whatever you may be allergic to) can add to this problem. Sleeping with your head-chest elevated may ease the problem- this will help prevent a build-up. Practice deep breathing as well.

Mucous builds up due to either irritation of the mucous membranes or from inflammation of the mucous membranes. You may have a low grade infection or are allergic to some particulate in the air.

Mucus buildup can be due to allergens. Mucus is the body's way of trapping allergens and irritants to help the body. You can make sure to keep your house as clear of dust and allergens as possible. You can also try using a product like Mucinex(Walgreens, CVS,pharmacy section).

Smoking and any other environmental factors that can do damage to the lung tissue. In addition, this "build up" could also be a sign of an illness such as a respiratory infection or pneumonia.
