There could be many causes from the most serious - stroke, neurological disorder, Bell's Palsy to simplier culprits such as lack of circulation (if numbness occurs upon waking). TMJ can cause these symptoms as well as sinus pain, headaches and difficulty swallowing.

There are lots of possible causes of unilateral numbness (numbness on only one side of the face). These can range from an infection or inflammation that presses on the nerves, to migrane symptoms, to more serious conditions such as a stroke. You should definately talk to a medical professional about this symptom.

Facial numbness one side can indicate a stroke, stress or anxiety symptoms, or possibly just having one's face in an awkward position to cause numbing. Verify with your doctor through blood work.
