Way more than I can fit on this page. Basics: DC- Red= positive Black= negative (example:car battery) AC- Black= "hot" white= neutral green= ground (example:wall outlet) For more detail, consult just about any book on basic electricity.

The only time that polarity matters when wiring is in DC devices. AC constantly switches polarity which is what makes it alternating. Solid state devices (especially digital) only work when hooked to a battery a certain way.

NEMA (Nat Electrical Manufacturers Assoc. ) standards for AC wiring. Black wire is HOT. White wire is neutral. Bare (colored) wire is ground. Electricity flows from HOT to neutral / ground. Do not touch Hot and any path to ground at the same time. DC flow is positive to negative.
