Progesterone is a hormone your body produces naturally. Women, for many different reasons, can sometimes produce low levels of this hormone. A developing embryo needs progesterone to supply it's nutritional needs until the placenta takes over somewhere between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy. Low progesterone can cause miscarriages, so taking a supplement is very beneficial.

Supplementing progesterone is used to help prevent a miscarriage in the first months of pregnancy. It is not recommended by many doctors because there is not yet any proof that it actually works. More research needs to be conducted before using this method.

If your doctor is giving you progesterone then your body is not generating enough to sub stain the pregnancy, it could also be a precaution.

I used a vaginal progesterone throughout my pregnancy and all was fine. It's like inserting a yeast infection cream and after that you feel nothing. For me, the extra progesterone helped me carry the baby to full term after 2 miscarriages.
