Question by  Baimer (19)

What can you tell me about the fuel level sending unit in my Nissan Quest?

My mechanic says it is broken.

Answer by  hedgemog (24)

Either the sending unit or the guage is faulty, but only can a conclusion be made by proper testing done by the mechanic. There are a series of electrical tests that need to be done to determine which unit is at fault. But be sure to check all fuses first.

The fuel level sending unit is a floater attached to a sensor. It works the same way as the float in your toilet. The sensor determines level by position.

First check the fuse to the fuel system, as the filter, pump etc. If that's ok, check that the unit is getting fuel. You can remove the filter and blow in one end. If debris comes out, then part of the problem may be the filter. Large chunks may indicate and pump going bad. Test voltage of sending unit.

you should not have any gas in the tanka.. i estimated how much i had and ran out of gas, i only put 3 dollars of gas to get back to my work area. although the web instructions say to remove the rear drive shaft, i did not have to remove it at all.

Make sure the fuse to the pump is in and good. Make sure the relay to the pump is working properly. If both of the above work properly then support and remove the tank, remove the unit and replace it.
