In North America the word "panther" usually refers to a cougar, also known as puma. Black colour is caused by presence of melanin.

I can tell you that there are not that many in the wild any longer. Most are in zoos or some other type of wildlife preserve. If you are thinking you will see one in your back yard, I seriously doubt you would unless they escaped from the local zoo.

The term , black panthers , is associated with two types of species. One is found in As Asia / , other is parts of central, north america. The species of north america , other oftenly called jagaur /is associated with black panther word black panther may be leopard or jagaur , it may be some species has remained back since old centuries in north america
