New Jersey has some of the highest tax rates in the country. They have a state income tax that is based on your income and many cities have city income tax also.

You have probably heard wrong. New Jersey has high rates of taxation for state and local taxes on income and property, and New Jersey has ranked as the highest-tax state in the US for the last three years after several years at #2 or #3. This situation is not likely to change in the foreseeable future.

New Jersey has very low gasoline tax. Unfortunately, state income tax and property tax are among the highest in the country. Income tax rates range from 1. 4% to 9%. For middle income - 40K to 70K - the rate is 5. 5%.
