Third Degree burns do not heal on their own. You often need a cream called Silver Nitrate and debriding of the burn to get the healing process started.

You should keep the area around the burn as clean as possible. You should always keep the burn covered with medical/first-aid ointment and a sterile cotton pad. The 'dressing', as it is called, should be changed at least once a day, and kept dry while showering.

Third degree burns are the most severe and most deadly of the three classes. Third degree burns usually require skin grafts in order to heal. The patient will be hospitalized and bandages will be applied to fight off infection.

Third degree burns, though not painful, are the most dangerous. The risk of infection is great because these burns can go to the bone. These severe burns usually require skin grafts. The burned area, if for example the hands, will probably call for physical therapy and many trips to the doctor.

You must get emergency help immediately. Meanwhile, apply wet cloths to the burned area for a short time. Do not let the person run. Hospitalization is usually required for treatment.
