What can you legally say on the telephone to patients?

I need to call some patients and need to ensure I do not say things I should not say.

As long as you know that you are speaking to the patient, legally you can divulge any information, however, devastating news should always be done face to face whenever possible.

That depends on what kind of patients you may have. As a veterinarian you may say almost anything you wish to a four legged critter. You must be extremely careful in talking to birds, as they may repeat your words to their owners. "Pay up, you bird brain", may hurt someone's feelings.

If you can research the HIPPA laws for privacy as you may or may not be talking to a patient. You could be talking to a relative or caretaker when you call.

As long as you are sure that you are speaking directly with the person, just inform them that the call will have sensitive data.
