Typically shoplifting is considered a misdemeanor, and every state is different. Some common penalties are fines, counseling ordered by the court, community service and/or jail time. Remember penalties vary case by case.

You should get some help for this shoplifting problem. Everyone always says it's not a problem but in all respects it is. You will probably be banned from that store for so long and you will have to pay a fine. You shouldn't have to do any jail time if this is your first offense.

The judge will tell you what you were charged with, advise you of your rights, then ask you if you want to plead guilty or not-guilty. Plead guilty and you will need to be sentenced, either right there or on a later date. Plead not guilty and the next hearing will be to review the evidence against you.
