While holding the shift key, right click the document. This gives you a new option of "open with" Use this option to select a program from your computer or use the web to find apropriate program. When you found the correct program, make sure you check the box, "use this program evey time I open this type of document"

To begin with, after you click to open the document, you will be faced with an option to Open with. With this, you can browse through your computer to select the most convenient, wordpad, to view your document. This will indeed work, and microsoft works is another program that can open it.

Type the file type (such as. exe,. pdf, etc) into google and there will be a number of pages returned that all offer suggestions for programs to download that will be able to open these files.

Do you know what program you can use to open it? If you do, then just head over to that program and open the document from within that program. Another thing would be to associate the program with the document. Double click and select an application to associate with document.
