The First thing you should do is have your furnace checked by a certified HVAC technician if these readings have occured during the winter months. Also, have any gas appliances checked for proper operation. Also if your CO detector is more than 5 years old, you may want to replace it due to the risk of a false high reading.

The carbon monoxide is probably coming from the furnace or hot water heater. Do a quick visual inspection looking for holes in pipes are vents. They should also be checked by a qualified technitian. Carbon monoxide could also come from lit fireplaces or kerosene heaters. If possible, try to get more ventilation near these appliances.

Find the culprit. Here are some possibilities: furnace, fumes from garage getting into the house, use of charcoal stove or generator in the house. It is of absolute importance that you figure this out and fix it because CO is a sneaky killer.

If you have a fireplace, I would start with the Chimney. Have it thoroughly cleaned and checked for emmissions. Once that has been done, check the stove, HVAC unit, boiler, Water Heater, or anything else that has a burner that is in your home. If you call a licensed General Contractor they should be able to perform all of this.
