Brittle toenails can be caused by an many things including underlying health problem, genetics, or nutrition deficiency. Most of the time the only cause is just a fungal infection to the foot which could be from sharing shoes or walking around without shoes in public places like swimming pool areas or gyms.

There are many reasons, but the top ones are iron anemia or other nutritional deficits, or a fungal infection. Your pediatrician needs to evaluate this- it can be a symptom of selenium poisoning so if you live in an agricultural area, it is particularly important to see your pediatrician.

In children, brittle toenails may be a genetic trait. The keratin of the nails may not be elastic enough to withstand the normal daily bumps, scrapes, etc. Wearing shoes or closed-toe sandals may keep this from being a problem, as will keeping the nails trimmed short.
