If the horse has cracks in his sheath it may be painful for him to allow extension for urination and cause an infection. You must clean the sheath with warm water and mild soap, then apply mineral oil. If your gelding won't relax enough for you, he may need tranquilizers.

Call a Vet just to make sure he doesn't have some kind of infection. Make sure you clean the area well to avoid any infections. Cracks and cuts are the major way that infections and diseases get into the horses body so treating them is the best thing you can do.

First consult with your vet so they can determine how bad the cracks are. Then the vet will offer sugesstions and treatment plans to correct the problem for your horse. The most important thing is to mkae it compfortable and to make sure your horse can handle the treatment that the vet prescribes.

Carefully clean the sheath, and apply a softening, healing agent such as Bag Balm, triple antibiotic, aloe gel. The Aloe gel might be more soothing and cleaner than the others.
