Cancer of the esophagus can be treated by surgery or radiation. The best results are obtained in early stage disease and by surgical therapy. When detected early, surgery can be curative, but most cases are detected at a late stage.

The primary and only potentially curative treatment for cancer of the oesophagus is surgery. Chemotherapy can be a potential therapy but does not offer the possibility of a cure. The choice of therapy depends on the stage of the disease.
