The first symptoms are usually a fever, sore throat, a headache and generalized weakness. As the diphtheria progresses the throat will begin to swell and the tissue on the back of the throat will start to die causing a greyish white membrane that covers the throat. Lymph nodes will be enlarged and the person will have bad breath.

The signs are a sore throat, fever, headache, and tiredness. The toxin from the disease destroys the throat tissue. A thick membrane can cover the throat and obstruct breathing. The membrane will confirm the diagnosis. If not treated, the membrane can cover the whole throat and larynx. The lymph glands in the neck become enlarged.
