You will know if the fuel pump is going because your car will not get any gas. You may be able to start it and go but you could make a turn and it stalls out on you. It could also sputter a lot.

A car with a bad fuel pump will sputter and lurch when it is underway when the gas isn't making it through the system. Frequent stalls are common, too. Check the fuel filter, too. If there's no fuel it it, that's a problem. Make sure you check all other systems, too. A new fuel pump is expensive.

You will notice that your car starts to become sluggish when you hit the gas pedal. You will also notice poor gas mileage and your car will struggle to keep speed, also your gas pedal will be farther down then usual. Sometimes you will also hear a buzzing noise coming from the trunk area.

If your fuel pump starts to go bad, it may lead to sputtering. Similar sputtering can also be caused by lack of spark, or a clogged fuel filter. Usually fuel pumps just fail, they don't exhibit symptoms over time.
