Melanoma usually starts as a sore that won't heal or a mole that changes in shape, size or color. If not diagnosed early then skin cancer can be quickly fatal.

Any changes in skin should be carefully monitored, as they could be signs of skin cancer. Such changes that one should pay particular attention to include the size and colors of moles and freckles, moles and freckles that open up and bleed, and new moles that form that are shiny.
