Working as a contractor means that you can select your work assignments. If its boring, you finish the contract and don't go back. You can also set your rates. The cons include needing to do a lot of paperwork for your taxes and liablilty insurance. Also, you don't get health insurance like many employees do.

Pros include higher pay rate and more flexibility of scheduling. It may include the ability to work for more than one employer at the same time. Cons include job insecurity, constantly hunting for work, and having to pay your own social security and FICA taxes in full, and no health benefits.

It is good for people who don't like to be held down to one thing or one place, but bad for people with families who need benefits or stability.

The main benefit is being your own boss. You can make your own schedule, take time off if needed, and turn down jobs for which you hold disdain. On the downside, you must pay your own benefits, work can be sporadic, and income varies widely.
