For the same reasons master craftsmen have used it for centuries, poplar was commonly used as a secondary wood (inner frame) of fine furniture due to its stability, lack of knots and strength. Pine is more decorative rustic look with its various knots, but prone to warping and other movement.

Pine is a softer wood and more prone to damage, but accepts stain very well. Poplar is harder wood, but is difficult to stain, so painting is a better option with poplar. It depends on how you are going to finish it.

Pine and poplar wood are very similar. They are both soft woods. The main difference may be in the price so compare them. The will both have a different grain finish and the popular may look a little nicer. If you want a little richer look to your molding you may want to go with the poplar.

Pine is a softer wood and poplar is a harder wood but does not look good stained. It does not have much of a grain. It is better painted.

Pine is a lot cheaper wood. It's a much softer too. I would recommend the poplar, it's a much nicer looking piece of wood than the pine, and will cost you a bit more, but I think it's worth it. It's harder, so it scratches less, and is more visually attractive than pine.
