Critters like frogs and lizards require much more specialized tanks and foods depending on the species. A freshwater aquarium is more simple overall. Again, it depends on specifically the species of fish as well.

When choosing between a fish aquarium and a critter aquarium it is important to understand the needs of the animals involved. Keeping a fish aquarium can be quite entertaining however, may require more maintenance as fish require cleaner water. Deciding to have a critter aquarium can be quite rewarding as they are hardier, however critters will not be as active.

A fish aquarium will require water, and depending on how big your aquarium is, it will be pretty heavy. When you go away for vacation, you won't be able to move it to the pet sitter. A critter aquarium won't provide enough ventilation so you must change bedding often for your critter. The critter will be more mobile for vacations.

Most critter aquariums weren't made to hold water so you can't switch them to a fish aquarium in the future. Fish aquariums were made to hold water so you can use them as either a fish or a critter aquarium. Both critter and fish aquariums are basically the same. You'll have to feed the animals at least once a day.

Fish are just friendlier and easier to care for; a critter on the other hand could be deadly and may be a hassle to care for.

Pro's of a fish tank include beautiful fish most of the time, and then an ugly messy clean-up of filter and bottom. Critters are fun, harder to leave alone.

The cons of a fish aquarium: balancing the ph, maintaining the water temperature, cleaning the algae off the glass, cleaning the rocks, changing the water. pros: relaxing to watch, fish are beautiful, you can buy automatic feeders. The cons of a critter aquarium: buying habitat pieces, daily feeding, worrying if they escape. The pros: depends on the type of critter

Fish aqquariums are designed for simply that, to hold fish. They have specifically sealed edges that aree capable of withstanding the high pressures of water, and waithstanding leakage.
