I know that civil law was influenced by Roman law, but I do not understand the features and the basic principals of civil law.
Legal systems elaborate rights/responsibilities in different ways. A civil law jurisdiction codifies laws, whereas a common law system is based on judge made law and is not consolidated.
Civil law covers pretty much everything that is not criminal or quasi criminal. It deals primarily with suing someone for monetary damages or injunctive relief.
