The five most popular breeds in order are the Labrador Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Beagle. Labs and Golden Retrievers are generally considered the most popular breeds for families due to their temperament and they are good with children. They do however require regular exercise as they are very active breeds.

I believe the American Kennel Club's website has the most up to date information on this. If memory serves me correctly the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Poodle, Boxer, Beagle, and Bulldog have been on the list lately. There should be a few more in the top ten and it can change slightly from year to year.
