Since steroids are a banned substance, athletes who take performance enhancing substances can risk long bans from competition or even life bans.

Each sport have different guidelines and rules with regards to legal ramifications involving steroids (including which steroids are illegal and legal - differs from sport to sport). Ranges in penalties also vary.

I would assume this in in regard to the player or players using a steroid or prhibited substance. the legal aspect of it's use is far less than the physical toll it would take on an athlete. As we have seen in Major League Baseball, there is no legal deterent to using.. Only the physical part.
