Inform the holder of the note that you want to surrender it. They will sell it and bill you for the difference owed on the original balance.

In most states, even if you voluntarily surrender, the finance company can still come after you for the amount owed- if the finance company won't work w/you consult Legal Aid.

If you voluntarily return your vehicle to the bank, the bank will (obviously) sell the vehicle at auction. You are liable for the difference between the sale price and the amount still owed on the vehicle. The bank is required. If you can't pay, the difference is disagreeable only through bankruptcy or forgiveness.

Getting a vehicle to voluntarily surrender in Florida is a clear demonstration of how education of the law among vehicles has given law enforcement migraines. Vehicles speed from neighboring states to take advantage of the more liberal Florida statutes. All that's required is to leave the unlocked vehicle in any Walmart parking lot.
