In general you should have only 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. When making this calculation, take into account the full size a fish may reach. Watch out for aggressive fish and stock them separately from normal fish. The aquarium store employees should know which fish are aggressive.

The general rule is one inch of fish per gallon of water. When you purchase fish they may not be fully grown and you should take the 'adult size' into consideration went stocking your tank.

The rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of the fishes bodies. However, the type of fish makes a difference as some are "dirtier" than others.
